Oh, 2017…what a year! Overall, my impressions of the past year seem to go something like this: what in the world just happened…I mean, let’s be real: 2017 brought its fair share of challenges. We (barely) survived a year under Trump, weathered a number of literal storms, and found ourselves confronting a seemingly endless onslaught of media scandals. To be honest, I’m glad to have left 2017 behind.
That said, the past year also held a number of real joys for me, and for Josh and I as a couple. We entered our second year of marriage (watch our wedding video here!), welcomed a new kitten into our home, and really started deepening our roots in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
I also accepted a new job as Copywriter for The Community Company, took a trip to New York City with my sister, and enjoyed a full year writing here at the Memoirs. Oh, and Meghan Markle got engaged to Prince Harry – anglophiles, rejoice!
It’s these sorts of events that I want to remember, which is why I’m dedicating this space to highlighting some of my favorite memories from the past year. Reminisce with me?
The Best of 2017
January: I launched the 30-Day Zero Waste Baby Steps Challenge.
I was seriously so excited to produce this zero waste challenge. Plus, it ended up being a great crash course for me on the intricacies of living a sustainable lifestyle. I really hope you’ve enjoyed it!
February: I started freelancing with my dream creative agency.
My background is in advertising, so when I had a chance to work for my dream creative agency in the west I jumped on the opportunity! Working with this team was such a treat; plus, I got to add some kick-ass content to my portfolio.
March: We met lifelong friends, Danielle and Jess, in Cheyenne.
Getting plugged into our local community was a big priority for us this past year. We love Cheyenne, but getting connected to a young adult community in a town like this can be a challenge. Lucky for us, we met these two gems!
April: We took our first real, zero waste camping trip.
Josh and I both love the outdoors and we’ve been so fortunate to spend the first years of our marriage in a region that values natural spaces. We really enjoyed this camping trip – plus, a totally posh camping site on the lake – and have gone back many times since!
May: I surprised (like, really surprised) my mom with a visit on her 50th.
This past year, my mom turned 50! To celebrate her birthday, my dad flew myself and my three sisters out to Spokane (my hometown) to surprise her at what she thought was just a dinner date.
June: I opened my Etsy shop, Laurel Lane Co.
I’ve always been an artist, so opening an Etsy shop for my custom artwork was really a no-brainer! Here I use my talents to paint portraits of my clients’ current and past homes, enabling them to preserve those memories for years to come.
July: Josh and I served as guest counselors at the camp where we met.
Josh and I met at Cascades Camp & Conference Center when we both served there as staff counselors during the summer of 2013. It was love and first sight, and we started dating immediately afterwards that fall! We’ve always longed to go back, which is why we accepted the chance to each lead a cabin over a single program week this past summer. We will never forget it!
August: When Harvey hit New Orleans, we vacayed in WA instead.
My bestie Emily and I had been planning a couples trip to New Orleans for nearly all of 2017. But when Hurricane Harvey started making it’s way from the coast of Texas to Louisiana, we knew our plans would have to change. Lucky for us, Josh’s parents have a beach house out in Ocean Shores, Washington, so we had a great backup plan.
September: We welcomed our nephew, Will, on the day of his birth.
We’ve added a niece and a nephew to our family in the past year and a half – something that really warms my heart! Cheers to Will, who made his appearance just a few months past.
October: We adopted Fiona from the Cheyenne Animal Shelter.
Andy needed a friend. Besides, who could possibly resist this cuteness? We are firm believers that “adopt, don’t shop” is the way to go; so when my mom was in town for a visit, we added this sweetie pie to the family! They get along perfectly – and her presence is all we dreamed it could be!
November: We spent Thanksgiving with family in Colorado.
2017 marked my first Thanksgiving as a vegetarian going vegan! And I have to say, it was still pretty damn delicious. We are so fortunate to live close to my aunt and cousins and take advantage of every opportunity we have to visit.
December: I took a trip to New York City with my sister, Bree.
Quality sister time is few and far between when you get married and move away…So Brielle and I took a spontaneous trip to New York City together during Christmas time and had a blast! Broadway shows, Times Square, Greenwich Village – you name it, we did it.
