Hello ZWM community!
I get a lot of questions about how I handle day-to-day zero waste situations via the @zerowastememoirs Instagram. For example: Do we still eat meat? Do I have ideas for how to keep fruit flies out of the kitchen compost? How do I stay polite while sticking with my values?
I don’t know about you, but I love a good Q&A, which is why I’m going to start answering bite-sized questions on my blog every other Sunday. Sound like fun? Let’s dig into how to eat zero waste in restaurants!
Do you still go out to eat?
Absolutely, we do! For the most part, we’ve found that if we prepare ahead of time and choose our outings carefully we can navigate restaurants and take-out locations without leaving trash behind.
Most of the time we try to select restaurants that we have experience with (i.e. we know they use reusables). Other times, we mitigate the waste issue by using our own cutlery kits (you can see what I’ve included in mine here), bringing a clean container with us for leftovers, and refusing straws, napkins, and other single use items.
When we eat at casual restaurants (think Chipotle or a juice bar) we bring with us *spotless* reusable containers and politely request that they fill those, rather than leave us with unwanted trash. 99% of the time folks are accommodating; just be prepared for a few uncertain looks.
The hardest part comes with spontaneity. We aren’t perfect, and sometimes enjoying a craving on the road means we end up tossing something unexpectedly. I try to avoid that as much as possible.
