Happy Valentine’s Day, world!
This year, Josh and I are saving our little celebration until the day’s festivities have passed, in favor of a little quiet time together. And while I’m not one to say no to a thoughtful gift like these, we are avoiding presents this year and opting for quality time instead.
Now, Valentine’s Day should never be the only day out of the year that you commit to spreading love wherever you go; but why not make the day extra special?
Here are a few ideas you can use to make the people around you go “awww!” like you just gave them a fluffy puppy all dressed up in tiny tennis shoes.
10 Immaterial Ways to Show Love This Valentine’s Day
1 | Leave a Note on the Mirror
Few things make me smile more than a sweet note left by my husband on the bathroom mirror. It’s a wonderful thing to wake up to, especially when we are working opposite schedules.
2 | Make a Favorite Treat
Is your sister obsessed with snickerdoodles? Or maybe your spouse can’t get enough of the perfect fettuccine. Make something special today!
3 | Be Selfless
Thousands of moments each day we come up against this choice: will we live for ourselves or for others? Choose the second! The love will come back to you.
4 | Take Real Time Out of Your Schedule
Sometimes the greatest gift we can give each other is our time. Go into work before everyone else so you can leave an hour early and surprise your honey. Skip one of your weekly evening activities and play hooky instead. Prioritize the people you love!
5 | Give a Massage
The daily grind often shows itself in my neck and back. Maybe your spouse is the same! Give a sweet, spontaneous massage to show your lover you care.
6 | Share an Affirmation
Words of affirmation are a love language for a reason! Make an upcycled Valentine’s Day postcard and write something sweet (with your zero waste pen) for your honey to find.
7 | Reminisce Together
Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to break out that wedding album or to scroll through you and your partner’s history together on social media. Spend a couple of hours remembering your favorite memories.
8 | Hand Over the Remote
Sometimes all you’ve got to do is leave the decision-making up to the other. Turn over the radio dial, the TV remote, the dinner menu and the map and see what happens!
9 | Give the Gift of Service
Use your hands today to serve the people around you. Do the dishes, fold the laundry, shovel the sidewalk, make a cup of tea. The little things matter!
10 | Put Them First
Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to make your loved ones feel like kings and queens. Don’t let the day pass you by without telling them you love them.
